5-HTP is the direct precursor of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. Serotonin is important for the manufacture of melatonin, the sleep hormone, that aids biorhythm regulation (sleep/wake cycle). Optimal serotonin levels may improve mood, energy, and metabolism. It has been seen to play an important function in mood and can positively affect emotions and sleep.
5-HTP helps to promote relaxation and calmness in the body and brain.
- Magnesium helps prolong the benefits of 5-HTP.
- A 1995 “Journal of Neural Transmission” study demonstrated that supplementation with vitamin B6 increases the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin in primate animal models.
